The Biggest Little Mattress Store in Indian Land

A place of refuge and a quiet in the storm; Someplace safe where you can let the cares of the day slip away into the land of dreams. A bed can be many things, but for most people, the inviting embrace of a comfortable bed feels like home.

No one knows this better than Jack and Dianna Balsley, owners of the Mattress Sale Store. Located at 142 Marvin Rd in Indian Land, SC, The Mattress Sale Store has been a leading source of quality mattress solutions in the Charlotte Metro since 2018, but the Balsleys’ history in the bedding industry and entrepreneurship stretches back decades.

Hitting the Ground Running

Jack Balsley says, “Right out of college, I began working for a window treatment company. This opportunity had me traveling the country as a district manager, and this is also where I cut my teeth in retail home furnishings.”

He continues, “From Ohio and the St. Louis area out to Los Angeles, I experienced a lot of success managing teams, which eventually led to an opportunity in Pittsburgh with a furniture seller. While in PA, I finished my Bachelor’s degree at Geneva College, and it was there that I took a chance that changed my life.”

Taking Chances Paid Off Big

Not expecting anything to come of it, Jack wrote a letter of interest to mattress company Serta. To his surprise, not only did he hear back, but he was also offered a position with the company. Through this opportunity, Balsley became a leading sales rep and opened 22 stores for the company from Youngstown to West Virginia.

“I’m not an expert in many things in life, but I know mattresses,” he laughs. “My philosophy is that everyone needs and deserves quality sleep. It’s what keeps us healthy, and if I can make someone else’s life better each day, that allows me to rest easy at night.”

A History of Innovative Marketing

Dianna, Jack’s wife, is local to the Charlotte Metro, having created a variety of businesses over the years. Dianna is known for her networking soirees in the Charlotte region and opened the first outdoor co-ed athletic boot camp in the area. “Back then, the only boot camp options were all geared toward military-style training. So I wanted to use my experience in health and fitness to give back and offer something unique,” she says.

“My extensive background in marketing has allowed The Mattress Sale Store to keep overhead low because we don’t spend on advertising. Instead, we save that money to discount our products. We do this because we want to offer our customers fantastic mattresses at the best prices.” She laughs, “And I think it’s worked out as we’ve gotten so many five-star reviews raving about the customer experience we provide.”

Community Means Everything

Jack adds, “That’s what it’s all about here. We chose Indian Land because it feels like home. Listen, I’ve lived all around the country. From Los Angeles to Pennsylvania, I’ve had a chance to experience every bit this great country has to offer. But, the Charlotte Metro region has been the only place where I’ve truly felt at home.”

Dianna adds, “The people of Indian Land have embraced our concept. We do everything ourselves because we never want to lose that personal touch. In fact, we even go on every single delivery personally to ensure that our mattresses are delivered in a manner consistent with our commitment to quality customer service.”

The Power to Offer More

Jack adds, “There are over 600 mattress companies in the country, but only a few of them rise to the top. We’re not tied to a single brand, which gives us the power to select only the finest quality products. When we founded The Mattress Sale Store, we wanted to create a place where our community could find the best quality at the lowest prices.” He notes, “Big-box corporate mattress stores are tied to only a select few brands. We want our customers to be empowered, so we offer a wider variety of hand-picked mattresses.”

“We would rather not sell you a mattress than the wrong one,” adds Dianna. “People are tired of the games and gimmicks. They want real customer service from people who care. Our approach embraces transparency, and we don’t hold phony sales just to get people in the door.”

What Makes Indian Land Feel Like Home?

When asked about what has made Indian Land and the Charlotte Metro so desirable, Jack and Dianna both agree that the people make the difference. Jack smiles, “I can’t tell you how often I get approached in the neighborhood by people saying, ‘I love my mattress! Thank you!’. And that’s just it – we know we’re making a difference because we can engage like that. Corporate stores may have a lot of flash, but we’re down-to-Earth people who want real customer engagement.”

“Jack was offered a position in Washington, DC, but we always knew our hearts belonged in the Carolinas,” exclaims Dianna. “Now that we’re here, we can’t imagine ever leaving. We’ve become so close with everyone in the community. From the gas station clerks to the mechanics at the nearby [Woody’s Auto] mechanic shop, we’re on a first-name basis.”

Indian Land and the Charlotte area offer so much in terms of quality of life,” adds Jack. “The mountains, the beach, the weather – it’s all just perfect. We also have a great church family, which plays a big role in our life together.”

The Right Mattress Makes All the Difference

Regarding the importance of getting a good night’s sleep, Jack and Dianna agree that finding the right mattress is vital. “A lot of people get comfort and support confused,” says Jack. “A mattress that offers support may not be comfortable and vice versa. Your body temperature also plays a huge part in your comfort, so even the most supportive mattress isn’t going to be right for you if it doesn’t provide comfort.”

“The right mattress makes all the difference,” adds Dianna. She points out that finding the right mattress is one of the keys to alleviating stress, and quality sleep is essential for good health. In addition, the Mattress Sale Store has won several NextDoor awards due to the couple’s commitment to providing an excellent customer experience. The Mattress Sale Store is also part of the Better Business Bureau as well as the Lancaster County and Greater Indian Land Chambers of Commerce.

In It for the Long Haul

Looking ahead, the Balsleys have considered expansion, but both agree that growth must be planned carefully. “We don’t want to lose the ability to offer personalized service,” says Jack. “Where we’re at, in this location, we get to know our customers and treat them like gold. While we certainly would love to offer a bigger mattress-buying experience, large retail stores tend to lose focus. We don’t want that to happen here because we greatly value the customer experience.”
